Few would deny the desirability of liberty, where the individual is free to pursue whatever course they see fit for whatever reasons they believe to be valid. The great problem is that the desires of individuals may conflict with one another and in so doing the freedom of one may take away the freedom of another. We all understand this very well. The fundamental challenge of society is to achieve a balance. You are free to do whatever you wish so long as it does not cause harm. Inevitably this results in a system which is no longer entirely free. The aspiration is rather to achieve an ideal state where all voices within are heard equally and no one, no matter how small or weak, is made to suffer unjustly through the actions of another. At least, this is the aim. <br />
There are two great hazards inherent in this problem that I believe we have fallen prey to. The first is in how we choose to define what is within society and what is without, the second is in seeing freedom as the ultimate goal, rather than the balance of freedoms which a just society requires. That is not to say that any group in human history has mastered the question but the scale and power of our current civilizations make the dangers of getting it wrong very great indeed.<br />
<br />
The law is the tool we use to describe what is permitted and what is not permitted within our society. It exists in two forms, the written form that is enforced by its official representatives, and the unwritten form carried in the minds of citizens, which we might call conscience. Each of us has a conception of what is permitted by law. This differs from individual to individual and few but professional laws have any conception of the true extent of the law as it is written. It is however the latter form, the conscience, that does more to prevent crime. To a large extent people police themselves and rarely choose do harm without facing extreme pressures. A problem arises with both forms of law when a distinction is made between what is inside the law and what is outside. There is a famous argument in the Dred Scott vs Sandford case, that slavery was a legitimate practice in the United States of America despite the words of its constitution. The supreme court majority opinion puts it thus:<br />
<br />
'In the opinion of the court, the legislation and histories of the times,
and the language used in the Declaration of Independence, show, that
neither the class of persons who had been imported as slaves, nor their
descendants, whether they had become free or not, were then acknowledged
as a part of the people, nor intended to be included in the general
words used in that memorable instrument.[...]<br />
They had for more than a century before been regarded as beings of an
inferior order, and altogether unfit to associate with the white race,
either in social or political relations; and so far inferior, that they
had no rights which the white man was bound to respect; and that the
negro might justly and lawfully be reduced to slavery for his benefit.
He was bought and sold, and treated as an ordinary article of
merchandise and traffic, whenever a profit could be made by it. This
opinion was at that time fixed and universal in the civilized portion of
the white race.'<br />

The argument being that at the time of the writing of the constitution, slavery was the accepted order and no one concerned with writing the constitution had any intention of questioning that order. Here are the words of the constitution again:<br />
<br />
'We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal;
that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights;
that among them is life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; that to
secure these rights, Governments are instituted, deriving their just
powers from the consent of the governed.'<br />
<br />
Is it possible that 'all men' could not mean all the human race? It was argued that it did not. It is possible that, at the time it was written, this was the case. The distinction being, what constitutes a man? Who exists inside the law and who exists without?<br />
<br />
I make this point at length because I want to highlight the absurdity of this question in hindsight. All slave owners were not inhuman monsters, certainly not in there own minds. What they did was inhuman and monstrous but many must have gone to their graves earnestly believing themselves to have lived righteous lives because they had no conception of the monumental wrong they had perpetrated. If that was true for people then, why should it not be just as true today? Are there things that we do, individually and as societies which are also great crimes but of which we have no conception?<br />
<br />
We currently have an international law. It has not so far succeeded in overcoming our instinctive tendency to treat those 'outside' of our society as less than ourselves. Let's take a hypothetical example: Would our government use a drone to attack a suspected terrorist in Birmingham, even at the cost of scores of innocent lives? Possibly it would! Would the British people perceive it differently than the same action elsewhere? Of course there is no need to use drones in Birmingham when one can simply drive there and arrest the suspect but does the lack of jurisdiction in another territory justify the action? Surely the argument in favour would be to safeguard British lives. And there you would have it. British lives would be implicitly of greater value than other lives to the British state. This is a very dangerous thing. As I said at the outset, our Western society values freedom. It claims to value the rule of law. The law cannot and will not function as a balance when all voices are not heard equally within it. The precedent of slavery clearly shows this. <br />
Our current society has become accustomed to the material benefit accrued from illegal actions done extra-nationally. We benefit from all kinds of practices that we would not tolerate in our own nation. Our powerful individuals have the freedom to benefit from these practices because the law may not give equal voice to those outside its reach. Just as the slave owners before them, how many of the people involved in these actions believe themselves to be criminal? How many of us judge ourselves as criminal for buying goods we know to be harmful. As the case of slavery shows, just because something is all-pervasive in a culture it does not make it any less of a crime. In fact it makes it all the greater. <br />
<br />
This brings us back to the question of freedom. If a society seeks to prioritise freedom over the rule of law it will become greatly divided between the powerful and free and the powerless and weak. Does that sound at all familiar? This is the condition that has largely prevailed on this Earth for all beings for millions of years. Currently we are in the unprecedented position of having creatures so powerful that they might threaten life itself. We are also in the equally unprecedented position of having creatures who are aware of the harm they may be causing. <br />
If those people who currently exist outside of our law were given a voice within it, can anyone doubt they would seek its protection? How then should we treat the lives that may never speak their case? If a powerful person seeks to abuse another person, the law may allow them to speak out in their defence. What if they abuse an animal or a plant even? Do these other forms of life have any right to the law's protection? Does a British animal have equal rights with an animal from another country? That question may sound absurd but it is far from from being so.<br />

Certainly, the individuals concerned didn't think they had done anything wrong. I could have used more modern images. There are very many to choose from. As with the case of slavery though, I want to use hindsight to show how practices once thought legitimate may come to be regarded as criminal. If the object of law is to bring balance and to ensure that the weak are not subject to the tyranny of the powerful, should it not concern itself with those least able to come to their own defence? I speak here of both forms of law, that which is written and that which we hold within ourselves. It may seem far fetched to talk of rights for all living things. But let's pause for a moment to consider what we have wrought on the world when human life takes precedence over all else.<br />
<br />
These are not problems for fifty years from now, for a generation hence, for tomorrow. These are problems today. It is our duty to address them. We do not question the narrative of freedom enough. Throughout history the powerful have always been free. They have been free to conquer, to enslave, to kill. Freedom is a toxic and deadly thing without conscience or law to restrain it. Neither one can act if they make any distinction whatsoever between what is within the law and what is without.<br />

You may have heard it said recently that Western civilization is in crisis; The near collapse of the banking system in 2008 pulled the rug out from beneath the feet of neo-liberalism and whilst there has been some level of stability since, there are some very strong indications that all is not well. Britain's recent vote to leave the EU and the Republican candidacy of Donald Trump in the United States are events that I did not think that I would see in my lifetime. They speak of an enormous discontent and disillusionment with the systems of government. I believe that many people in our culture have become isolated, afraid and angry. Lacking meaningful and dignified work, lacking a sense of connection to their community, to a common culture and history, they feel they have been left behind, passed over and ignored. We see the evidence of this all around us. I myself feel exactly the same way.<br />
<br />
As a result we have become vulnerable to an ancient and seductive narrative, the narrative of the other. If I was an American I might long to hear these words: 'I am an American. America is the greatest country on Earth. I am proud to be an American.' But how do those words sound to all the other nations of the Earth? What about these: 'I am British. I am proud to be British. Britain can thrive without Europe. We are stronger alone.' This narrative elevates the national at the expense of all others. If to be American is to win, to be anything else is to lose. That is all very well... If you are the winner. This narrative allows people to starve at our borders or drown in our oceans because they want what we have but we don't want to share it. It's ok if people die. They aren't British people. They aren't American people. <br />
<br />
This narrative is not unique to Britain and America but common to all nations and all people. It is the narrative that says, 'to be of our nation is to be human, to be anything else is to be less than human.' It can be applied equally to one nation and another, to one village and another, to one person and their neighbour. If your neighbour is 'other', they are less than human. They can be insulted, tortured, abused. Anything can be done to them without question, without empathy, they are not you, they are another. This century we have so far taken only a few steps back along this road. But every step taken must be resisted with all our power. We have only to look back at century upon century of unceasing war and bloodshed to realise how real are the risks we run when we set out in this direction. <br />
<br />
Above all things I believe in the community of life, not just human life, but all life on this planet. As human beings we are in the privileged position of knowing that we are alive. Each of us individually knows the value of their own life. It is great. To have lived at all is an astonishingly improbable thing. We know this. What then shall we do with this gift? For many centuries there was a strong case to be made for fighting tooth and nail for survival. To survive at all it was necessary to be powerful, to dominate others. We are lucky to live in a world where this is not always the case. This poses a very difficult question. If we do not live to survive, why then do we live?<br />
<br />
Has it ever troubled you that this question does not seem to be asked by our government? It troubles me. How can we ever hope to build a society if our society has no reason to be? How can you form a strategy without an objective? Of course, our government has strategies, it has objectives, but what is the super-objective? What is the guiding principle? Is it economic growth? Is that what it is? How can I be a citizen and not know the answer to this question?<br />
<br />
This is a conversation we need to be having as a nation, as a species: What do we want from our society?<br />
<br />
I wish I lived in a culture where the fulfillment and happiness of all that live were valued above the generation of economy. Standard of living has often been confused with material possession. They are related but they are not the same. Many times in our recent past we have chosen to prioritise economy above happiness and that, I believe, is a form of social madness. <br />
Our society should pursue growth. It should pursue the growth of knowledge and understanding. This should be its highest ambition. Through education a society may become creative, dynamic and resourceful. Ask yourself what you have valued most in your life. Is it what you possess or is it who you have known, what you have experienced, what you have achieved, who you have helped? Material poverty should not be treated lightly but society needs aspiration to survive. Your society should aspire to the same things that you aspire to. It should not aspire to material wealth in excess. This statement is so familiar it has become cliché, yet still our society seems to judge its success by the generation of economy.<br />
<br />
We have heard it said a thousand times that money cannot buy happiness. That may or may not be true. Having wealth can make the challenges of life far gentler. It can open the doors to myriad experiences. Money has a value, that is its defining attribute. The sickness of our society is that we measure the money and not the happiness it brings as the final arbiter of success. <br />
<br />
Money is not an end, it is a means to an end. You've probably heard that before. Isn't it time we asked our ourselves what exactly that end is? <br />

A: Viv is a very good friend of mine. I like writing stories for
her to draw because her pictures make me think of different kinds of
stories to tell. My pictures tend to be better suited to stories

A: I imagined what it would be like to
be lost in a big strange city. At first the character was a big,
tall bear. That was easier for me to imagine because I'm quite tall.
My publishers pointed out that children reading the story would not
know what that was like. They would be more familiar with the sense
of being small. The story grew (pun intended) from there.</div>

called. We don't live on Planet Alexis do we? Or on Planet Ilham
for that matter! Would you like it if we did? I think I'd be
embarrassed if the planet was named after me! It would be waaaay too
much attention. I find my own birthday parties awkward enough.</div>

that I moved back to London, which is a big city like the one in the
story. It was never intended to be about me though. In my mind
Beegu is a living breathing creature. Perhaps it is inevitable that
some of our own experience comes out in the stories we write. I
would, for example, write a terrible book about what it is like to
drive trains. I know nothing about it!</div>

I would passionately urge everyone to see it. I have seldom seen such a powerful expression of all that is best and all that is worst in humankind.<br />
<br />
The film follows a group of rangers tasked with protecting the land, the plants and creatures of the Congolese National Park, Virunga. Their job is a dangerous and sometimes deadly one, bringing them into frequent contact with ivory hunters and poachers. As if this wasn't bad enough the park is watched with hungry eyes by people keen to explore its potential as a mining site for rare and precious minerals and as a possible source of oil.<br />
<br />
What is truly of value in this world? Is it gold? Is it
diamonds? Is it oil? Those things are rare certainly. Without them
there are things we would not be able to do. But many of the uses we
put them to serve no purpose other than to indulge our own need for self
glorification. <br />
<br />
It seems to me that this film confronts one of the great questions of our age. Our system of value is hideously distorted. Possibly it has been so since before we became human. Like all animals we are greedy. We want to thrive, to succeed, to be rich. But I believe that we urgently need to ask ourselves, each and every one of us, what those things truly mean. This is not a new thought. It is in fact a cliché. But what does it say about us that we can have known the truth of something for generations and yet still be unable to change it? <br />
<br />
Our current global system is based on a principle of continuous economic growth. Doesn't the absurdity of that leap out at you when you see it? How is it possible to continuously grow in a finite space. It is not. It is impossible. And we live in an age where the sheer number of our species is forcing us to recognise this fact.<br />
<br />
<br />
I do not say that it is wrong to seek to grow. But where is it possible to grow? It is possible to grow in our education, our understanding, in the exploration of our universe and our own world, in promoting peace, in friendship, in empathy, in developing skills, in refining craft, in art. Does this sound like a load of hippy bulls**t to you? Well I tell you this, every single moment that I have valued in my own life has been through one of those things.<br />
<br />
There is a point in the film when two men working for the company that wants to explore for oil in the park express their incredulity that anyone could risk their life on behalf of a 'f***ing monkey.' They cannot believe that anyone would value a gorilla above themselves. If it is a question of saving a species over having a bigger house, a bigger car, power, influence, well, who in their right mind would choose the gorilla? I WOULD! I would give every single barrel of f***ing oil in the world if it meant that we could preserve that species. What I struggle with is believing that anyone else could think otherwise.<br />

Please do go and see the film and if you are clever, could you please work out how we can fix ourselves because we can't go on as we are much longer!<br />

It occurs to me that with a bit of planning I could actually make a real story this way... One with exciting installments and a plot - instead of me just saying the first thing that comes into my head into the microphone.<br />

This isn't that story, I'm afraid I just made it up as I went along as usual, but I did make a sort of first installment of that science fiction diary I proposed in the last post. I used to love the BBC show <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journey_into_Space" target="_blank">Journey Into Space</a> when I was small and I would love to do a series of my own in that vein. <br />
