mad dogs and crocodiles

I find that although I am trying to keep the roughs for Mr Punch super rough I still have to draw something when new characters appear.  Cerberus arrives in a couple of pages so I had to work out how I was going to draw him without spoiling the design process later... He is supposed to look equal parts terrifying and cute

I think I'll go with the top one ^-^

The trouble is after I've drawn a character a lot, even trying to keep it as lo-fi as I possibly can, I do seem to get attached to them as they are!

By now I am finding it very difficult to imagine the central characters looking any different from this:

I think they will have to though!

  1. That's how I imagine them... I think they kind of should!!

    1. I had a really interesting conversation with some other illustrators about the concept of 'drawing quality' at the SCBWI conference the other day. I am increasingly coming round to thinking that 'more content, less effort' is a good motto to live by!

    2. That said, I think I will pimp them a little... Solomon (the boy) has a series of costume changes throughout the story that I don't bother to draw in the roughs.

    3. I'm so flipping excited about this that I want to have themed wallpaper and socks and pasta shapes every day forever.

  2. Hi Alexis - wasn't sure how else to contact you so this'll have to do. Just a quick note to say thank you for last weeks lecture (university of Brighton) - I was the one that had to run off at 6 to go to a concert of Sigur Ros but enjoyed your lecture so much that I decided Sigur Ros could wait. You're a good speaker and a great drawer, looking forward to see more of your work! Cheers, Emmi Smid, www.emmismid.nl
